Open-source software is managed by the software developers that contribute to its development. Open-source software is software that is not owned by a company. Google and Microsoft use the Chromium browser and add their own features and customizations (I'll discuss a few later) while still maintaining compatibility with any other browser built using the Chromium browser. They can add customizations while maintaining compatibility with any other Chromium browser. Using the Chromium browser as a foundation, anyone building a complete web browser can save time by getting a large amount of pre-designed software. It's the core that does most of what is necessary for any web browser software, like opening and displaying web pages. The Chromium browser isn't designed to be a complete product for consumers or organizations. Google's Chrome, Microsoft's Edge, Opera, and Brave all use the same foundation of the Chromium browser and add to it to make their fully-featured products. The Chromium browser is an open-source (more on this a little later) product available for anyone to use free of charge. Both use the same underlying software, called the Chromium browser. Google's Chrome browser and Microsoft's Edge browser are closely related, but you may not know it.
